By Mafalda Sequeira Braga
What makes an architect and a
pharmacist join to create an interior design and furniture company? The Passion of Tiago Patrício Rodrigues and João Vilela about space
and the objects originated the Pura Cal, a project that was born in
late 2010 after they realizing that did not found at a competitive
values on the market the products they considered fundamental
to creating their projects. When the problem was identified, decided
that could also provide to others, the pieces that they aspired.
Assumed as a concept and a way of
living and thinking environments and furniture, with the mission to
be enable the create unique and differentiated spaces betting on
functionality, comfort and well-being. The alliance between design,
tradition and contemporaneity is reflected in the complementary
services the brand offers, from design to architecture and interiors
pieces, not forgetting the unique and eclectic selection of pieces
sold, mostly produced entirely in Portugal.
The designers in direct speech:
Where comes your inspiration to work?
The spaces, objects, materials in which
we work is itself a strong source of inspiration. But it is clear
that our personal and cultural references always end up in the guide.
As is usually the process of creating a
piece or project?
Much of our imagination is based on the
stories that spaces / objects / materials "transmit" to us,
their time, and their soul. In this sense, our design attempts to
interpret and revive the soul of each individual piece, giving it a
unique identity and highlighting their "experience",
whether past or future.

What do you think distinguishes Pura
Cal from other designer brands? What are your strengths?
We believe that our strong point is the
"soul" that we never tire of mentioning, and we try to give
to all objects and spaces that we intervene. Having soul is to have a
history, a past, a future. It is also to be unique, unlike any other,
without banality, but also be "human", with virtues, flaws
and inconsistencies.

In your work, words with the prefix
"Re" - Rehabilitation, Recovery, Reuse, Re-Design - win a
major highlight. Why this choice?
We live in a time when the
instantaneous consumption, no longer meets the goals of the majority
of people, with an increasing need to rediscover identity in all that
surrounds us. Our "re" comes first, this idea of
rediscovering something that already exists in one form or
another, it can be seen from a new perspective and a new
understanding.

What you liked to achieve in
professional terms in 2013?
We would like to continue to see grow
our project, increasingly betting on our design and our products, as
well as confirm the bet on our new space in Lisbon, recently opened.
