O nome "Mesa Pedestal" deve-se ao facto de o seu pé ter a mesma forma de um pedestal de um cálice de vidro, contudo, esta mesa ficou mundialmente conhecida por Mesa "Tulipa", pois faz parte de uma linha de de mobiliário, onde a forma da sua peça mais icónica, a cadeira, se assemelha a uma Túlipa.
The "Pedestal Table" name is due to the fact that its feet have the same shape of a glass calyx, however, this table was world recognized as "Tulip" because it is part of a furniture line where the shape of its most iconic piece, the chair, seems a tulip.
O famoso arquitecto Americano de origem Finlandesa, Eero Saarinen, desenhou em 1956 uma vasta linha de peças onde o objectivo primordial era o minimizar a amalgama de pernas que existiam nos conjuntos de mesas e cadeiras de jantar. E o resultado não poderia ser melhor, através de um desenho orgânico e fluido, onde o peso se distribui através de um "pilar" central em sistema radial, o designer consegue diluir não só o peso da estrutura, mas sobretudo o peso formal e visual das diferentes peças que desenhou com este sistema.
The famous American architect from Finland, Eero Saarinen, designed in 1956 a large collection of pieces where the main object was minimize the quantity of legs types that existed on dinner tables and chairs. And the result couldn't be better, through an organic and fluid drawing, where the weight is distributed through a central "pillar" in a radial system, the Designer can diluting not only the weight of the structure but also the formal and visual weight of the different pieces that he designed with this system.
As mesas Tulipa, tal como acima mencionado, foram pensadas como parte de uma linha de mobiliário e existem em diversos formatos e funções. As mesas de jantar podem ser redondas ou ovais, podendo os seus tampos serem em mármore, em madeira ou lacados. Existem também versões de mesas de apoio redondas e mesa de centro/café também em formato oval.
O design de Saarinen confunde-se com uma escultura minimalista ou uma arquitectura futurista, muito em voga na época e que por exemplo Niemayer popularizou. São essas mesmas características que têm formalizado o sucesso desta mesa ao longo do tempo, pois as suas formas orgânicas e simples e o seu aspecto minimalista, interagem muitíssimo bem com outros tipos de mobiliário e ambientes, tal como apresentamos em alguns exemplos abaixo.

The Tulip Tables, as mentioned above, were designed as part of a furniture line and exist in many shapes and functions. Dining tables can be round or oval, their tops may be marble or lacquered wood. There are also versions of round side tables and coffee tables also in oval shape.
